How should you work as a student? Here you can read research-based learning techniques developed at UiT Norway's Arctic University. The advice concerns both specific study techniques and more general advice for your study situation.

The following eight points are designed by Rannveig Grøm Sæle, Torstein Låg, Kent Nordby, and Frode Svartdal, psychologists employed at UiT Norway's Arctic University. 

When you read

When working with the subject matter, there are some techniques that according to research work well:

  1. Self-test. Research shows that self-testing / practice testing / "hearing" itself works effectively. Then you practice recalling knowledge, and you get checked what you can and what you can not.
  2. Plan your reading smartly. Work in short sessions, mix different topics during the reading day, and rehearse (combined with self-testing).
  3. Look for connections and associations. Try to link what you read to what you know about the topic. This helps you to understand and remember better.
  4. Understanding versus fact-learning. Understanding and deep learning are important, but understanding requires knowledge. So also focus on learning the necessary factual knowledge. It is not enough to know how to find the information when you need it (Google), you simply need to know a lot and essay.

When you are at a lecture

To increase the learning outcomes from the lectures, we suggest the following:

  1. Come prepared. Lectures work best when you have become acquainted with the material before the lecture.
  2. Take smart notes. Noting can help you stay focused during long lectures, but be careful not to lose the thread. Do not write down everything the lecturer says, limit yourself to writing down concepts, questions, and keywords for yourself.
  3. Be active. Ask questions and contribute to discussions. Lectures can quickly become long monologues on the part of the lecturer, and it is very much up to you that this does not happen! By being active and formulating questions, you also help yourself to remember the material.

When attending seminars and colloquia

If you are in doubt about attending seminars and colloquia, drop the doubt and participate! Why? Because:

  1. Seminars/colloquia are social meeting places. The social side of student life is important, and seminars/colloquia provide an opportunity to get to know fellow students.
  2. Seminars/colloquia provide the opportunity for presentations/submissions, in writing or orally. Say yes to all such opportunities, the learning benefits are great! Practice makes perfect, and the practice you get in seminars and colloquia is invaluable.

Seminars/colloquia give self-testing an expanded meaning. Here you can test your knowledge, correct misunderstandings, and discuss with other students. By explaining principles and concepts to others, you quickly understand for yourself what you have not understood and can get help from fellow students. Another time it may be you who has understood best, and then you can help others.

Work habits

Research shows that good work habits in the study situation are important, more important than whether you are "stupid" or have "talent".

  1. Work when you are obvious. Learning takes place best when you are obvious.
  2. Work short sessions, 20-30 minutes, then pause. Each working day contains many sessions.
  3. Work sensibly. Reading 20 minutes followed by a self-test and repetition of what you missed is better than reading all the time. Vary topics you work on during the day.
  4. Make sure you are fresh and obvious. Exercise, a healthy diet, and good sleep habits contribute to good health, well-being, and profits.
